On Tuesday, OpenAI released two open and freely available AI models for the first time since it launched GPT-2 in 2019, similar to Meta (META.US)'s Llama.

The two text-only models, named gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, will be available on an AI software hosting platform Hugging Face, OpenAI said. These models can generate text based on user prompts but do not support images or videos.

These models can also perform complex tasks, such as coding on behalf of users and searching for information online, the Company added.

In fact, several tech companies, including Meta, Microsoft (MSFT.US)-backed Mistral AI and Chinese startup DeepSeek, also released open weight models in recent years.
